  6. Gramercy Pilates Fitness The Beginner Class

    Pilates is a system of over 500 controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the total body. It is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, contin uous motion, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region, sometimes referred to as the “powerhouse”). 

    The focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity, which makes one feel invigorated rather than exhausted after a session. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked and the body works as an efficient, holistic system in sport and daily activity.

     

    Our Beginner Class is for those of you who are totally new to Pilates or have maybe tried it a few times. You will be taught by a certified teacher who will guide and cure you through several basic Pilates Core Principles,  Pilates Mat and Machine choreography.

     

    The first 15 or 20 minutes of class will focus on these Pilates Core Principles that are critical for you to learn in order to reap the true benefits of Pilates. They include breathing, (and why it’s important), pelvic stabilization and activation, thesafe way to raise your head to protect your neck through cervical nod and curl, and how to properly stabilize and mobilize the shoulders.  

     

    You will then move onto choreography which will include some basic Mat exercises and several movements using the entire Reformer Machine. Here is where you will incorporate the above Pilates Core Principles in each and every exercise.

    Stretch/Release/Relax Class
    This class teaches a specialized massage and stretching approach  to release and relax areas of tightness and soreness all over the body caused by every day stress. You will als o imp rove  your range of motion, circulation and realign your entire body leaving you refreshed and energized.     This workshop, a new and unique approach to movement, taught by studio owner Steve Wheeler. It combines the elements of Yoga, Isometric Exercises, Martial Arts and Mediation. This is a challenging class for those interested in a different approach towards alleviating everyday stress. You’ll feel uplifted in mind and body as your blood circulation, balance, posture and strength will significantly improve.


    New! The Shen-Ergy Balance Class: 
    This class is focused on balance, strengthening the feet, legs and back. You will be working on the flexibility of the hips, legs and back as well. It’s  for anyone who wants to have fun doing some unique exercises, working with martial arts principals to help your body move more naturally throughout your life.  The exercises are done in a controlled manner so the body can understand and feel the difference in a much deeper way. 

    Classes are Wed. 11a and Fri. 11a. and start the week of Jan. 10.

    New Gyrotonic Instructor

    Amaya Lansing

    We’re very happy to announce that Amaya has joined our studio as an Gyrotonic Instructor. She has studied to receive here certifications with Certified Master Trainers Sebastian Plettenberg and Erika Hassan at Gyrotonic Manhattan. Amaya has personally experienced the benefits of Gyrotonic and is passionate about teaching others to experience the same. She has also studied eurhthmy, yoga and is currently teaching Argentine Tango. 

    In addition to teaching privates, Amaya will also be teaching both Gyrtonic Tower and Gyrokenisis classes.
